Working Together to Support Your Child’s Mathematical Learning
Dear Nyssa Elementary Families,
At Nyssa Elementary, we believe that every child can become a confident and capable mathematician. This year, our teachers are taking a collective approach to mathematics instruction so that students experience consistency and connection as they move from one grade level to the next.
We are using ideas from The Math Pact by Karen Karp, Barbara Dougherty, and Sarah Bush to help us develop a shared approach to teaching mathematics. The goal is simple: we want all of us—teachers, staff, students, and families—to work together to support your child’s mathematical learning.
Our teachers are working collaboratively to make sure that important mathematical ideas, vocabulary, symbols, models, and strategies are taught and reinforced consistently across classrooms and grade levels. When students encounter familiar ways of thinking about and representing mathematics, they can spend more time developing understanding rather than trying to figure out different methods from one classroom to another.
An important part of this work is helping students understand why mathematics works, not simply memorizing a rule or shortcut. We want students to be able to explain their thinking, use models and representations, solve problems in different ways, and make connections between mathematical ideas. Our goal is to build understanding that will continue to serve students as mathematics becomes more complex.
How can families help?
You do not need to be a math expert! One of the most helpful things you can do is ask your child questions such as:
“How did you figure that out?”
“Can you explain your thinking?”
“Can you show me another way?”
“Why does your strategy work?”
“What do you notice?”
Please encourage your child to talk about mathematics, make mistakes, try different strategies, and explain their reasoning. We want children to see mathematics as something they can understand and make sense of—not simply a collection of rules to memorize.

En Nyssa Elementary creemos que cada niño puede convertirse en un estudiante de matemáticas seguro de sà mismo y capaz. Este año, nuestros maestros están trabajando con un enfoque colectivo para la enseñanza de las matemáticas, de manera que los estudiantes tengan experiencias consistentes y conectadas al avanzar de un grado al siguiente.
Estamos utilizando ideas de The Math Pact, escrito por Karen Karp, Barbara Dougherty y Sarah Bush, para ayudarnos a desarrollar un enfoque común para la enseñanza de las matemáticas. La meta es sencilla: queremos que todos—maestros, personal escolar, estudiantes y familias—trabajemos juntos para apoyar el aprendizaje matemático de su hijo.
Nuestros maestros están colaborando para asegurarse de que los conceptos matemáticos importantes, el vocabulario, los sĂmbolos, los modelos y las estrategias se enseñen y refuercen de manera consistente en los diferentes salones y grados. Nuestra meta es desarrollar una comprensión que continúe ayudándolos a medida que las matemáticas se vuelven más complejas.
ÂżCĂłmo pueden ayudar las familias?
¡No es necesario ser un experto en matemáticas! Una de las mejores maneras de ayudar es hacerle preguntas a su hijo como:
“¿Cómo descubriste la respuesta?”
“¿Puedes explicarme cómo pensaste?”
“¿Puedes mostrarme otra manera?”
“¿Por qué funciona tu estrategia?”
“¿Qué observas?”
Anime a su hijo a hablar sobre las matemáticas, cometer errores, intentar diferentes estrategias y explicar su razonamiento. Queremos que los niños vean las matemáticas como algo que pueden comprender y razonar, y no solamente como una colección de reglas que deben memorizar.
En Nyssa Elementary estamos comprometidos a trabajar juntos para que su hijo tenga una educación matemática conectada, consistente y significativa durante toda la escuela primaria.
