To Families and Staff of Nyssa Elementary,

The end of the 2024-2025 school year is here and time to reflect, celebrate and prepare for the work still to come for the 2025-2026 school year.  I want to share about the state of Nyssa Elementary and continue to strive for the best education services possible for your children.

I want to share some celebrations with you about Nyssa Elementary:

Attendance was a focus area and we set a goal of 94 % attendance for Nyssa Elementary.  With your help and creating a positive environment for working and learning, we achieved 94.2% attendance for the school year.  Learning is best for students with consistent attendance and engagement in the classroom.

Another focus was on our Reading literacy and Math skills. The goal was to reduce the amount of students needing interventions and support reading in English, Spanish for our Dual Language program and Math. We have seen some great movement towards this goal.  Achievement growth is represented by the same students from fall 2024 to spring 2025 and below are the results of our efforts by grade level.

Kindergarten students achieved 10% better in Picture Vocabulary and 5% in listening comprehension. Math had the highest growth and achievement that grew from the 39th percentile to the 66th percentile.  Meaning almost 70% of the students are meeting Math proficiency, thus reducing the need for interventions.

First, second, third, and fourth grade students had more students advance from foundational skills in Reading to Oral Reading Skills.  This is great because their literacy skills are advancing, so they do not need interventions.

In addition, First grade students had 6% growth in Math, raising their Math growth to the 69th percentile.  Almost 70% of the students are at grade level, reducing the amount of intervention needed.

Second grade students increased their reading using STAR and achieved 10% growth in comprehension skills. ELL proficiency was above the state average, with fewer students needing ELL services.

Third grade students achieved 31% in Spanish and 24% in English proficiency. Math growth was in the 41st percentile, just below the goal of the 50th percentile. ELL proficiency was above the state average, with fewer students needing ELL services.

Fourth grade students grew 4% in sentence reading fluency. In Math, 6% achievement growth increased 10 percentile points to have the highest Math growth in the 68th percentile. ELL proficiency was above the state average, with fewer students needing ELL services.

Fifth grade students in Math grew from the 39th percentile to 43rd percentile in student achievement.  Reading growth in STAR went up 5% in Spanish and the whole fifth grade achieved 46% in English.  There was a 3% percent increase in State Assessment for Science proficiency. ELL proficiency was above the state average, with fewer students needing ELL services.

Reflecting on these achievements is rewarding and needs to be celebrated, but there is also a need to keep improving and “raising the bar” for our students. Students will rise to the challenge and we want to continue to challenge them.  We will continue to grow and set high expectations for our students and staff.  We have expectations for attendance 94%, academic success in Reading Literacy (45%), Math (40%) and Science (30%).  In addition, behavioral expectations that support students' emotional needs, but don't hinder their academic success; teaching coping and resilience skills for students to be successful in class meetings and effective use of our school counselor.

You will be able to identify some changes and continuation of our programs. Title I will continue to support students that are below grade level in Reading.  The Science of Reading is implemented schoolwide.  After school programs and family engagement activities will continue.  Migrant after school program will continue to support our migrant students.  Dual Language programs at each grade level will continue.  Partnerships with non-profit organizations, such as, Building Healthy Families, Imagination Library and Malheur ESD will be robust.  In addition, our Parent Teacher Organization will be growing and supporting volunteerism at Nyssa Elementary.  We are grateful for the work they do for our school and we need your support.  Please volunteer.

On Jun 19, 2025, you will see our new reader board sign up and running.  The new playground is to be completed before Thunderegg Days in mid-July.  We will dedicate this playground to the students and community before school starts in August.  Teachers are going to be using summer to recharge and be ready for the new school year.

Remember that Nyssa’s Food Service has started their Community Summer Meals Program for kids and teens ages 1-18 years of age.  FOOD, FRIENDS, and FUN serve breakfast at 7:50-8:15 and lunch 11:15-11:45 at the Nyssa High School Cafeteria.  It is FREE too! www.summerfoodoregon.org

Again, thank you for trust in educating your children and may we continue to build a positive community starting with Nyssa Elementary, where bullpups grow up to be Bulldogs!

Respectfully,

Shane Pratt, Principal

Respetuosamente,

Shane Pratt, Director
